Poetry

You’ll probably question why I even posted much of this.  Well, part of it is some sort of ego-boosting attempt to make myself seem prolific; but, more than that, I plan on using the embarrassment caused by making these poems public as a motivation to revise them.  Oh, and the knowledge that there are people who enjoy the sort of trite, abstract crap that epitomizes my work was a factor as well.  After rereading all of these, I really feel that I should have stopped writing poetry in eighth grade, because it didn’t get much better, but I shall take my state’s second top thinker, Thomas Alva Edison, as my example and forge ahead anyway.

The most recently posted/revised poems will appear at the top of the list.

A Battle Here Is Fought” – Ninth grade crap about psychological “battles”.

A plant prospers in the sunlight” – Eleventh grade attempt at hidden metaphor.

A year ago, on Halloween night” – A poem from middle school in some Form (I can’t remember which).  I remember thinking this was brilliantly hilarious, and, hell, it still makes me laugh.

As I stand here on the brink” – This poem’s most noteworthy accomplishment is that it is the spawning point for “Monument”.

B & N” – My favorite of all the poetry I have ever written.  Won second prize at my high school’s poetry reading/competition.

Brand New” – A fantastic triumph in writing cliché-ridden country lyrics.

ABC’s, STD’s” – By far, Jerky!’s most “famous” song, written with Erica.

Carbon Copy” – Another triumph in clichéd lyrics, this time in punk style.  Inspired by a ska song lost in my laptop which I believe is by Professor Plum.

Dresser of Wretchedness” – The result of a writing exercise in which I pulled from one box a household object and another an abstract state.  Woo-boy!  This one has had its share of laughs.

False Hope” – ABAB to the max!  Written about a friend of my brother with whom I carried on an online friendship for two years.

Gods of My Mind” – Clichéd, but not without redeeming qualities.  Just a start of an introspective poem.

High School” – This was the most popular of my poems in high school.  Definitely amateur, but I am beginning to show promise as a writer when I make this.

I Can Tell” – It’s for writing things like this that I get called a nymphomaniac.  A salute, I suppose, to the sexually independent woman.

I opened the door” – An attempt to write about darkness in a creative way: as one would normally write about light.  Interesting idea; perhaps I’ll rework it and make something of it.

I Said Someday” – The start of a song directly inspired by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones’Someday, I Suppose”.

I saw you from the across the room” – “Cloud of gloom”?  This must be about a certain ex-boyfriend.  Despite all its faults, I like this piece.

Weak Apology” – I go soft rock on this one.  It’s more the rhythm that I like than the lyrics.  Of course this doesn’t come through on “paper”.  Written probably in ninth grade as an apology to a friend for some sin I can’t remember.

No Need for Thanks” – Just a pair of rhyming couplets I wrote as a cynical quip intended for an ex, but for some reason I love them.  I always felt I should make something more from this, but it really embodies an emotion and philosophy that is as simple as the words used to express it.

One Moment” – One of my first forays into “free verse”.  Like the same moment is Hollywood flicks, where the couple is just about to kiss for the third time and the phone rings, it is pure crap.

Poem Ending in ‘Eating Red Carnations by the Dozen’” – Another writing exercise.  This one turned into an unintentional Carroll-esque thing.  Not sure if I like or loathe it, but it’s funny.

Seductress” – Another nymphomaniac poem.  I took a big chance on the form of this one, but I believe it can be worked out to make a nice poem.  The end needs to be taken to the nearest trauma center.

Stalker Theme Song” – One of a few stalker-themed poems and another one for the nympho category.  God, I’m sick.

Sunset” – Gives me the creeps for some reason.  A writing exercise to use certain words in a poem.  A lot of imagery and one really awful line.

Super Scary Psycho Stalker” – Swing, baby!  My favorite set of lyrics to-date.

the ANGER song” – I need to make better use of my thesaurus than this, but I do enjoy the rhythm.  Ten points for using “petulant”, awkward though it may be.

The man of a million faces” – It’s difficult to believe that I actually cut some of my more embarrassing poetry off the list.  This one makes me wonder if I really saved any face in doing so.  Oh, I love puns!

There is nothing so great” – This episode brought to you by Capitalism and the letter ‘F’.  More trite crap.

To Be American” – This is no more than a blatant espousal of Objectivism.  Final rating: utter crap.

The Toast” – And you thought I couldn’t be any more of a sucker.  This one, though, I like.  Consider it “The Toast of Singles” if you will.

Dirty Laundry” – The title gives it away: expounding on clichés!

Walking into the Darkness” – Dizzyingly rhythmic and trite reflections of going away to college.

Monument” – You knew there was a reason you read all the way down the page.  This is it!  One of the best pieces here.
