Poem Ending
in ‘Eating Red Carnations by the Dozen’” Walking through the woods With a broken heart trailing Not far enough behind, I saw him under a sycamore tree. He stood short and stumpy Hunched over as if He could hardly stand. “This is the man to ease my woes” I whispered to myself Without knowing why Or how I knew such a thing Without my saying a further word, He began to speak Not looking up As is his audience Was himself. “Stop. Take not one step further. Ye must here me out.” I stopped on instinct Not thinking of danger. “It is your heart that troubles you. There is a simple way to overcome The pain you feel. First you must drink only wine Some days white Some days red But never drink the blush. Second sleep in a hammock Not in a bed Cover yourself not with sheets But a blanket woven From the grass that grows Under your own roof. The best thing you can do is give gifts Especially to people you do not know. It does not matter if you Pack your gifts in boxes or bags But always use the red ribbon.” I assumed that the meaning would Someday become clear to me But for now one thing was obvious He had given all the advice he could And so I left him alone again Eating red carnations by the dozen top – discuss – poetry
