Tuesday – “Underage Web Browsing”

I was having a sleepover at my parents’ house, but it was a much larger and richer house than the one in which they actually live.  In attendance were Alissa, Barb, myself, and sometimes Steph.  We spent quite a lot of the night on our computers, browsing the web on my parents’ Comcast high speed internet connection.  Interestingly, to save money, my parents had recently switched from an unlimited access to a monthly prepaid amount of bandwidth.  Around three in the morning, we had been finished with the computers for a while and were considering sleeping, when the phone rang.  I didn’t want my parents to know we were awake, but I didn’t want the phone to wake them up either, as there is a phone next to their bed.  I decided to wait until the third ring to pick up.  My mom answered at the same time.  It was Comcast.  I assumed that we had used up my parents’ bandwidth allotment, and that they were going to be pissed.  When my mom came downstairs, she upset not about bandwidth, but about violation of some sort of underage web browsing violation.  Apparently Barb was too young to browse the internet unsupervised by a parent, and Comcast had some reason the suspect that she was doing exactly that.  I challenged this idea asking if they thought we were viewing anything offensive or mature (we hadn’t been), and my mom replied that that didn’t matter.  I’m not sure what consequences would have resulted from this violation, but my mother was pretty worried.  At breakfast the next morning, a whole slew of my friends were eating with us and we were debating the subject.
