Question of the Week: Who is a hero? Who is your hero? My answer: I think an essential element to answering the second question lies in the answer to the first. In order to choose a hero, you must have some criteria for them to uphold. Discussing this with Erik recently, I confided that my hero would have to be someone I know. To me, heroism is not some objectively obtainable attribute; it is something ascribed through personal relation. A hero must be someone whose value and depth I have experienced first-hand, someone I know fully and well. Being a hero requires not a singular act of bravery or accomplishment, but a soulful devotion to and pursuit of a productive lifestyle, a pursuit that is inspiring and compelling. One person who I hold as a personal hero is my brother. He embodies this soulful devotion perfectly. He has twice turned down jobs offered him by Microsoft (from what he has told of his one experience working there, this would take quite some devotion), because they did not offer him the internship position he wanted. He is being paid to go to graduate school (on top of free schooling) to act as a research assistant, and as a result of this research, he will be flying out to California to present one of his papers before hundreds of conference-goers. He is 24. To think that I am of the same blood and perhaps the same capabilities of my brother is indeed inspiring and compelling. |
